In Lego League, one of the tasks is to create a research project on the theme and task for the season. This season the theme is Animal Allies and the task for the season is to improve the relationship between humans and animals. Our team chose to focus on bats and specifically bats and white nose syndrome.
White Nose Syndrome (WNS) is deadly disease that affects mainly North American bats. 6.7 million bats worldwide have already died from White Nose Syndrome and more are infected every day. The syndrome has affected bats in 27 states and 3 provinces. Most infections are in the northeast U.S. Minnesota has 8 species of bats 4 of which are endangered from the disease. The disease is caused by a white fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructants. The name of the disease comes from the white fungus which grows on the bats nose and wings.
More information can be found on our Effects of White Nose Syndrome page.
Our idea is to create a video with a fun and interactive mascot, Bobby the Bat, to spread the word about WNS and how to prevent it. The video can be shown or posted anywhere from nature centers to classrooms. Below is our video and a survey that goes along with it. It would really mean a lot if you could fill it out!!!!!
